For the last few days I’ve been listening to Kilroy’s tracks almost non-stop. Kilroy’s style of playing is very interesting, unlike anything I have ever heard before. Their genre of music is difficult to pin down, but is best described as a mix of Classic Rock, Punk, and a bit of Blues. Not that unusual of a mixture but the way they combine it all is astonishing.
The first song on their EP is ‘Salary Slut’. ‘Salary Slut’ in my opinion shows Kilroy’s incredible range of music and it has a very fast tempo. The music flows well on this track. The guitar is fast strumming, with very crisp chord changes and the solo is dead-on. The bass is kind of hidden which I don’t like. The bass is one of the most important instruments in a band. It keeps everyone on time, so that was disappointing to me. The drums really interact well with the rest of the song. The fills are placed where they should be and it just all around fits the song. The vocals are good, it all comes in on time, and he sings on key, which really brings out the good [sic] in the song.
‘When It’s Over’ is the second song on their EP and my least favorite. I just don’t feel like it flows all together well; the guitar is kind of cool, the drums I am not a fan of, I cannot hear the bass once again, the vocals to me are just kind of off. I’m not a big fan of this one.
The third song is in my opinion the best on the whole EP, it is called 'Love Don't Hate'. I like it because you can hear the bass! Finally! Seriously though, it is a great song you can really tell that the song has a lot of meaning behind it, I would be really interested in finding out what the song is really about. It has another great guitar solo, great rhythm to it and the drums really make the song here. The drums make it the ballad it is.
The fourth and final song ‘If I Had My Way’ has its ups and downs. Just like in all their songs, the guitar part is great and the solos are perfectly placed. Still no bass though. The singing is fine, the lyrics are good, and you can tell that that they really have a strong meaning behind them. I also like the gang vocals at the end. It’s a good way to end the EP.
All and all, it’s a great EP. Kilroy is definitely be a band I would like to see. It’s very apparent that these guys know what they are doing and they take their music very seriously. I have a lot of respect for them and what they are choosing to do. Check them out at www.kilroymusic.com.
